Giants Causeway - County Antrim
Giant’s Causeway, is a geological wonder, renowned for its 40,000 polygonal columns of layered basalt. It is the only World Heritage Site in Northern Ireland. Resulting from a volcanic eruption 60 million years ago, this is the focal point for a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and has attracted visitors for centuries. Although legend has a different explanation: that the columns are the remains of a causeway built by an Irish giant Finn MacCool, who was challenged to a fight by a Scottish giant called Benandonner. Finn accepted the challenge and built the causeway across the sea between Ireland and Scotland so that the two giants could meet.
