Mourne Mountains from Murlough Beach - County Down
The Mourne Mountains are the highest and most dramatic mountain range in Northern Ireland, its summits crowned by granite tors. The highest of these is Slieve Donard at 2800 ft. A shingle beach and four mile strand at Murlough are all post glacial features, shaped by wind and waves over the last 12,000 years. Out to sea, stretching from the Mournes to St. John’s Point lighthouse is Dundrum Bay. The long sand flats at Murlough mean the wave energy is dissipated and sand is gently pushed up into long lines.
