County Sligo and Mayo
Despite their natural wonders counties Sligo and Mayo remain a well-kept secret, offering all of Ireland's wild, romantic beauty but without the crowds. Mayo is the more rugged of the two, with scraggy peaks, sheer cliffs, heather-covered moors and beautiful offshore islands where life is dictated by the elements. Sligo is more pastoral with its lush fields, fish-filled lakes and flat-topped mountains.

Dun Briste Sea Stack at Downpatrick Head - County Mayo
Dun Briste and the surrounding cliffs were formed around 350 million years ago when sea temperatures were much higher and the coastline at a greater distance away. There are many legends describing how the Sea Stack was formed but it is widely accepted that an arch leading to the rock collapsed during very rough sea conditions in 1393. This is remarkably recent in geological terms. The sea stack stands 150 feet tall.
