Brecon Beacons, Carmarthenshire and South Wales

The Brecon Beacons mountain range in South Wales offers some of British mainland most spectacular scenery. The region is characterised by remote open moorland, high mountains, and some of the UK’s most impressive waterfalls. Nestled between Pembrokeshire and the Gower Peninsula is Carmarthenshire known as the "Garden of Wales" and through this garden flows the rivers Teifi and Twyi as well as having the idyllic coastline of Carmarthen Bay. By contrast the Glamorgan Heritage Coast has almost 30 miles of cliffs and sands from Penarth to Portcawl and the Gower Peninsula was selected as the first Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty for its classic coastline and its outstanding natural environment.

Lady Falls - Brecon Beacons

This famous waterfall, "Lady Falls," is in a tributary stream of the Neath River and are formed where the Afon Pyrddin drops 20 ft over a lip of the "Twelve Foot Sandstone." The lady concerned was one of the many daughters of Brychan, the 5th Century King of Brycheinog. The sandstone tilts gently to the south so forcing the waters of the Pyrddin up against the foot of a high cliff of mudstone and over the left-hand side of the rock lip (when viewed from below). In higher water conditions the fall gradually extends further to the right. The upper surface of the sandstone is roughly patterned with the fossil roots of trees. A rocking stone (now dislodged) sits on this bench some 50 yds to the north of the falls.
