Harthope Valley - Northumberland
Controversy raged over the building of several new tracks in the hills on both sides of the Harthope Valley in the late 1990s by the landowner for the purpose of management of the moorland, particularly for shooting. Reduction in grazing pressure from sheep has led to an increase in the amount of heather which is regularly cut and burnt, improving the habitat for grouse.
